Eve 0.75

The “construction zone” also knows as our future house is not baby friendly. Sitters have been required and often Paul and I work shifts of 2 to 4 hours each at the house while the other person is at home with the offspring.

As busy as we are, we have not shared the exciting news that said child has become mobile. She did not find rolling to her liking and skipped instead to scooting and crawling. Her prefered (aka only) direction at this point is backwards. She gets really far this way but at some point, you end up in a corner you can’t get out of. I am sure when she is older and wiser she will find there is a valuable life lesson in this but for now, it just pisses her off when after 30 minutes of circling and crawling she gets herself stuck in a corner. (Feel free to make references to the famous line from the movie Dirty Dancing or truck beeping noises at this point. We do.)

Yesterday while Paul and I were both at the house demoing tile, vinyl flooring, and reconfiguring kitchen cabinets, Eve behaved for the sitter and took an extra long nap in the afternoon. The sitter was concerned about the 3 hours nap she was taking. So she checked on her and she was fine, fast asleep snuggled in the corner of her crib. I arrived home at hour 3.5 of the marathon nap and peeped in myself. Ahh – sleeping baby. A tired mother’s happy dream. But upon closer inspection, there is something in the crib that doesn’t belong there. The OTHER half of the baby monitor which is supposed to be 2 feet away from the crib on the changing table. She can apparently pull herself into a standing position now. There’s a little bump on her lip and a smear of red on the crib edge to show exactly how motivated she was to get the flashing monitor. To bad it stopped flashing when she yanked the cord out of her mouth.

We have now dropped the crib mattress from it’s easily accessible height to create a deep recess from which we hope she can not escape – for now at least.

RE: Continuing Destruction

Of course when we started it looked like a pumpkin explosion.

The railing was the last thing that needed to go.

Important to note – we are still married unlike most of the couples on the Home Improvement Network.

Continuing Destruction

As the ceilings are being re-textured (by professionals) demo continues (by us amateurs) below. We’re less than two weeks to move in so it’s time to start serious construction, which means demo must be done.

Most of Saturday was using a 20lb. demo hammer to shatter and pulverize the entry tile which feels like it was added to the slab instead of put on with thin-set afterwards.

So much shattering!

It was much easier to take a sawzall with a metal blade and cut off the railing between the living and dining rooms. Once the header goes up and the frame comes down there’s a straight shot from the raised living room through the dining room and into the family room.

image

Today is going to be about picking up the pieces (of tile), marking the family room ceiling for speakers and lights, and stripping out a set of cabinets from the kitchen island to create an overhang.

Did I mention we’re going to be living here in less than two weeks?

Undefending Google

I will eat crow for my previous defense of the Google/Verizon deal rumors last week by providing a link to this insightful analysis of the actual deal.

Warhammer Fantasy RPG 3rd Edition

I’m going to post for a bit about a pen-n-paper roleplaying game. It’s nowhere near as a consuming hobby for me as video games, but I’ve been playing and reading RPGs* for about 20 years starting back with Dungeons and Dragons in the 7th grade.

Warhammer was the second RPG I played. Towards the end of my six week leave to welcome Eve into the world I started to get the hang of the whole father thing** so I picked up the new third edition of the Warhammer Fantasy Role Play game (WFRP3) and started reading. I even convinced Amy and a few friends to play a couple of sessions. We had fun and I hope to start it back up once we complete the move to the new house and get settled in.

Here’s two videos giving you an overview of the game. There’s some really great mechanics and ideas in this game. It’s not like old school RPGs and I think it’s better than D&D 4th edition and Savage Worlds.  I’ll post more about it in September hopefully coinciding with the restart of our game!

Wave is Dead

Google Wave is dead. Guess it makes sense when even my tech-savvy friends didn’t understand it or like it. Oh well, maybe the next real change will catch on. I can only hope we will move beyond facebook and email and IM some day.

What I really hope for is to have Wave functionality be rolled into gmail similar to how gtalk transcripts become email. It was a bad move to integrate Buzz into gmail but Wave as an option would be awesome.

Power save mode

You may not hear much from me in the next three weeks. Work is busy and my evenings taken up prepping  the new house for move in.

Will try to keep you all posted perhaps through pictures or interpretive dance.
