Natural disasters

Yesterday I survived my first California earthquake. Happened at 4am and I remember waking up for some reason and immediately falling back asleep. Didn’t know it was an earthquake until I heard people talking about it at lunch. Ah well, maybe I’ll be awake for the next one.

Comi-Con!

Comi-con is coming. First round of pre-registering ends 4/20. After that the price goes up by $5. If anyone wants to make the trip I can provide lodgming and transport. The convention center is a pain to park at, but I can find a trolley stop to get us downtown. Let me know if you want to come.

Thoughts on San Diego

Coming up on two full weeks here in San Diego and here’s a few thoughts:

San Diego is more three dimensional than KC. I know that KC is flat, but SD has depth in the topography and in the highways. In KC you just knock down another cornfield to put up a suburb and drive a limited access highway through the middle so people can get around. Here you’ve got ocean, hills and mountains to contend with. Urban density is greater, but the buildings and the roads have to contend with hillsides and valleys. Most everything is broken up and there’s very few straight roads and right angled intersections.

The highway system is impressive. There’s not enough space to make long looping cloverleafs, so it’s compacted and shortcut down back alleys and soars overhead. But eveything is well signed and the plainly marked”freeway entrance” scares off the clueless (heh).

Can’t complain about the weather. Sunny and more often than not there’s a cool wind off of the ocean. Cool in the night (50’s) and warm in the days (high 60’s). I don’t know where poeple around here go to vacation.
