SotS Demo on Tuesday

Fileplanet will have the first crack at distributing the Sword of the Stars demo on Tuesday, but you can be sure that other sites will soon follow. I know a lot of my friends liked the demos I’ve been showing people. Here’s a chance to get your hands on it yourselves without having me break any NDAs. :)

Demo is available on this page: http://www.fileplanet.com/165574/160000/fileinfo/Sword-of-the-Stars-Demo

Comic-Con Wrapup

Wow the place was crowded. Comic-Con actually sold out. The fire marshall said “you’ve got too many people here” so registration was closed on Friday, you couldn’t get tickets at the door.

My brother and I scoured the exhibition floor which took us about 9 hours over two days. (My wife weeps that I can only shop for 9 hours at a geekfest.) We only wound up going to one panel which was the Heros panel on Friday.

As sdemory has said the show is so cancelled. The only reason it won’t be cancelled is because of Lost, but it could be the next Invasion.

Anyway, what is Heroes? Well it’s the new show from NBC that is touted to be the lost killer. Humanity has reached the next step in evolution and a handful of people have the genetic disposition to exhibit extranormal powers. We got to see the DVD/Director’s Cut/Extended Version 74 minutes of the pilot. The story starts at the very, very beginning as these few people scattered around the world realize that there’s something really different about them.

The reality basis is very well done. I expecially liked the Texas cheerleader that is pissed off she’s invulnerable because she realizes that her whole life is going to change. Maybe not today, but sometime down the road. The pilot hints at connections and links between the majority of the powered people. The mind reading cop is working on the case to hunt down the radioactive terrorist who’s organization crashed a train that the cheerleader saves someone from, etc. etc. It will be interesting to see how each character figures out their abilities (ala Smallville) how they fit into the bigger plot to nuke New York (ala 24) and how they’re all connected and there for a purpose (ala Lost). If they can keep the focus and keep it interesting you can be assured I’ll be watching. It’s a definite TiVo for me, but I’m like that.

More Than Comicon

Paul’s been excittedly updating on the time he spent with Alex at Comicon. I wanted to point out that there was more to the trip than just collecting swag and previewing movies and games.

Friday night we introduced Alex to 14 of our closest friend via a poolside party in his honor. While they did not pursuade him to move here – I think he was at least very entertained. It’s so warm our 11 pm swim was a nice end to the day.

On Saturday we slept in from the night before and then headed out to walk around down on the pier. We toured the USS Midway, a recently retired aircraft carrier. As impressive as the 20 ton anchors were, the steam engines that get 18 feet per gallon of diesel and the landing deck itself, the kitchen aid mixer that was taller than Paul, was one of my favorite things. In the afternoon, we went swimming. There’s been much swimming since we’re having record heat in the upper 80’s and lower 90’s. (Remember, no airconditioning at home or at work for me before you mock me.) We wrapped up the day having dinner with my friend Chie at Sushi Ota.

On Sunday, we headed to the International Sandcastle Championship in Imperial Beach. The sandcastles were cool – but not as much as the thousands of interesting people we got to gawk at. We celebrated the successful trip by taking Alex to our favorite restaraunt Candalas which serves Spanish French fusion in the gaslamp district.

Alex hit the road this morning, we will miss having him around. Roe’s handing out at the front door since he left with his suitcase.

On the plus side, the guest room is free for whomever decides to pop by next :)

Comic-Con Day 1

There’s pictures, but I think I had a little too much caffiene since they’re mostly blurry. Didn’t go to any talks just scoured the exhibition hall. My brother picked up many things Totoro and I think I’m going to complete my Invader Zim figures.

The big happening of the day was our quest for Heroclix. My brother, two friends and I all entered into a drawing for the chance to purchase the limited edition Spectre and Cthulhu ginormous heroclix. The Spectre is for a friend and the Cthulhu was for the hell of it (heh). We got one of each so my friend is very happy and we’re trying to decide who’s going to sell the Cthulhu on Ebay since none of us actually play Heroclix.

There’s some videogames at Comic-Con as well. In fact, Marvel did a joint booth with Activision plugging their next title. We were able to play some Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers at the Behemoth booth. Both were running on X360s so I bet there’s some Live Arcade downloads in the future. Over at the THQ booth we saw Company of Heroes and Warhammer40k: Dark Crusade in action. Also saw the Supreme Commander video that’s floating around on the Internet. Got to play a little Auto Assault at the NCSoft booth, meh. And Lex got in a good 15 minutes of the Warhammer MMORPG while I talked to my work. His report is a Warhammer skin on World of Warcraft. That’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Comic-Con Preview Night

Wow last night was crowded. We broswed the exhibition hall for about 2 hours last night, but it looked like a Friday not Wednesday. Probably about twice the people from last year. Didn’t really have time for any exclusives, the drawings for the Spectre HeroClix starts on Thrusday, and the Penny-Arcade guys said the second book will hopefullly show up from the printers Friday or Saturday.

The Back Row

I am sitting so far from the stage the band security guys are 1/4 of an inch tall. Still, I am out on a school night about to party and watch the Foo Fighters with my sweetie. OK so his seat is on a lower level than mine – we’re at least hearing the same great music together. And yes, I am drinkimg coffee to stay awake before the show starts. Still, we’re making memories for our golden years. And the incredibly amorous couple next to me is making me sick. Still, we’re TRYING.
One thing we realized when we moved here was that we had not gotten out much in KC. We decided we needed to take advantage of all the goings on about town here in San Diego. It’s hard to drag myself awake from the comforts of home after a long day. But I bet I’ll remember what I did on this monday night long after what’s-his-name next to me forgets what’s-her-name next to him.
