GNO – Warning

Just a head’s up that GNO may not materialize tomorrow. We’ve been at a low turnout for the Burnout games and I know one of us is out of the country. I’ll be there, but don’t be surprised if it doesn’t happen.

Here’s a great short story about time travel from Desmond Warzel

Reporting my first temporal excursion since joining IATT: have just returned from 1936 Berlin, having taken the place of one of Leni Riefenstahl’s cameramen and assassinated Adolf Hitler during the opening of the Olympic Games. Let a free world rejoice!

Back from 1936 Berlin; incapacitated FreedomFighter69 before he could pull his little stunt. Freedomfighter69, as you are a new member, please read IATT Bulletin 1147 regarding the killing of Hitler before your next excursion. Failure to do so may result in your expulsion per Bylaw 223.

Take it easy on the kid, SilverFox316; everybody kills Hitler on their first trip. I did. It always gets fixed within a few minutes, what’s the harm?

GNO – Make Friends and Run Them Off the Road

We’re continuing with Burnout Paradise this week. See if you can get a few cars unlocked in single player so we can play some races at higher class levels.

Fun Fact: Did you know the Burnout series is developed by Criterion Games, a company in Guilford? It’s quite amusing to listen to massive amounts of U.K. accents in their podcast.

Gary Gygax – R.I.P.

Wired has the news. The “father” of D&D and tabletop RPGs is dead today. I was into videogames before tabletop RPGs but the differences between what was on the screen versus what was in my mind during the 1980’s was great and I have Gary Gygax in part to thank for that.

I think I’ll go re-organize my dice tonight.

GNO – Burnout Primer

The Games Night Online game for the month of March is Burnout Paradise. Here’s a few tips:

  • You can only open cars in the offline mode by completing challenges and taking out other cars. We’ll start with the bottom tier of cars if we do any racing early on.
  • Get comfortable tooling around the city. I’ll probably take everyone on a tour with the early co-op challenges to hit the points of interest.
  • If you have a camera hook it up. Every time you get taken out you send a quick pic to your nemesis. There’s also podium pics for the winner of a race.
  • Find all the gas stations, paint shops, repair shops, and junkyards. The gas and repair shops are pretty critical to completing the more advanced single player challenges.
  • For burnout vets the “stunt” type cars are the ones you’ll be used to. Aggression cars are tank-like and get boost by smashing opponents or traffic. Speed cars are just weird. They’re fragile and you only gain boost by going at top speed. If you stop a boost you lose it all and need to build it back up. Anyway, stick with the stunt cars until you’re comfortable with the city.

Really when you get down to it Burnout is all about driving fast and smashing into things so have fun and I’ll see you on Tuesdays.
