We love company – and I find myself writing the same list over and over so here it is.
Cabrillo National Park & Lighthouse
The lighthouse is in a state park and after touring through it there are a few nice walking
trails and some world war II museum stuff that’s fun to walk around and see.
The Midway Aircraft Carrier
The Midway is always fun – it takes a FULL day to see everything though.
San Diego Maritime Museum
You can go on a soviet sub, two sailing vessels (one is the worlds oldest active sailing ship built in the 1880′s) and a steamboat. They are self guided tours so you walk around at your own pace and read all the history. This has been a favorite of everyone from my Mom to my buddies from Kansas City.
Giant park with 14 museums, four theaters, gardens, and even an antique carousel. There is a large frisbee gold course here as well. The buildings are ornate Spanish-Moorish style buildings and this is where Kent took Amber to ask her to marry him when they came to visit.
This is a good half-day activity. They have some amazing creatures but it is a smaller exhibit.
The Design District / Solana Beach
The street I work on is called the Design District and it’s full of high end residential shops and materials for building. It’s fun to walk up and down and it’s a block from the beach where there are some nice ocean-front restaurants to go to.
The Boardwalk from Pacific Beach to Mission Beach
We run this on the weekends. It’s about 4 miles of beachfront shops, houses and people watching. In mission beach there is a midway and you can get surf lessons. At the crystal pier, you can rent a bungalow that is on the pier and sleep over the ocean. We like to eat at “World Famous” right on the beach.
World Famous San Diego Zoo or Wild Animal Park
There’s always the zoo – which never get boring. We’ve been a few times a year since we moved here and we’ve NEVER made it through the whole park. There’s to much to see in a day.
Queen Califa’s Magical Garden
The sculpture gardens in Escondido – one of only 2 installations by this artists with 2 story sculptures. The other is in Italy. Lots of fun – and free. Good to hit the stone brewery on the way home.
There are some original historic buildings, parks and lots of shops and good mexican restaurants. A fun place to wander for a few hours or pick up a tour.
A few things we haven’t done yet but want to are
Kayaking at the Cove
The menu is great but I can’t help myself -I get the cheese soup every time. 4 kinds of
blended cheeses served over a bed of mashed potatoes. My arteries harden in my sleep
when I thin about this place. It’s an interesting mix of Spanish and French styles – very
We typically order the mercy of the chef. The chef has never failed us. It’s locally
grown food – excellent portions that don’t make you stuffed but so perfectly cooked and
spaced over the course of the meal so you feel just right. It’s a above-average night
out for us price wise so we only spring for dinner here a few times a year – but always worthwhile for fancy, delicious dinner in a non-pretentious place.
Cafe Sevilla or Costa Brava
Eating spanish tapas is just fun. There are literally 80 dishes to choose from – all
with 4 bits per plate. You can try a good 10 of them with a group of 4 and some
patience. There are two place.
The Poseidon doesn’t have the history – but it is the best beach dinning I’ve ever
enjoyed. It has a more contemporary californian cuisine and a little bit of an asien
Sheerwater @ the Del
This place is all about the experience of dinning in a historic hotel on the oceanfront.
It has great ambiance and even better people watching. There are weddings on the lawn in
the summer -and ice skating on the beach in the winter. The food is always good to but
we really go for the people, the sunsets and the feeling of history.
The best “bar” food around but everything is homemade and extra tasty. They even make there own ketchup and crackers! Odd but the difference is good.
Good, reliable beach eating – even when the sunset is cloudy.
Corona – Mexian and GREAT carnitas
California Pizza Kitchen – where we go for salads – the pizza is OK but the salads are fantastic
